Whether the communication is as small as a flyer or as large as a book, Barefoot Teacher will deliver any and all stages of the project – on time and within budget - from the pre-production stages of conceptualising, researching and sourcing material for the project, to writing and editing copy, to seeing through the final stages of proofreading and printing.

Copywriting

-          Media copy (advertorials, features, interviews, press releases, scripts);

-          sales and marketing copy (books, brochures, magazines, newsletters, presentations, websites);

-          business writing (annual reports, biographies, business plans, company profiles, educational materials, funding proposals, training manuals, project reports).

Copy-editing

Basic editing of print and electronic publications of any type and length, including:

-          editing grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation and other aspects of style;

-          obvious factual inconsistencies (e.g. a date rendered as ‘30 February’);

-          checking for consistency of styles;

-          checking references in the text against the bibliography.

A more substantive edit could also include reorganising of the manuscript’s structure or content and limited rewriting.

Re-writing

Re-writing involves producing a new draft of an existing manuscript or document. The process may include the insertion of fresh copy, deletion of copy, reorganising copy and/ or re-writing copy into a different style.

Proofreading

Proofreading usually includes:

-          checking proofs or final edited material against the design, checking minor spelling, grammar and punctuation errors, and marking incorrect styles;

-          checking corrections of proofs against earlier versions, checking running heads, page numbers, cross-references, placement and references to illustrations, etc.

Research & Consultation

We assist organisations with communications-related needs, including: publication projects; feasibility studies; funding proposals; project plans, project evaluations and audits; communication systems design, turnaround strategies and campaigns; and marketing communication plans and strategies. 

Project management

We are happy to manage communication and publishing projects from conception to delivery if that is what the client requires. However, we are aware that many non-profit organisations have difficulty funding outsourced projects. In the spirit of the 'barefoot' philosophy therefore, we strive to assist organisations to build their own publishing capacity.  

 In the interests of promoting knowledge production, special rates for editing and proofreading are available to South African tertiary students.
